Hamsterley Forest is a 5,000 acre mixed woodland, open to the public all year. Facilities include a forest drive, woodland walks, cycle routes (hire available), picnic areas, adventure play area and permanent orienteering courses.

There is also a visitor centre displaying exhibits on forest wildlife and forestry and a forest shop selling a range of gifts and souvenirs. The shop and visitor centre are open 1 April to 31 October weekdays 1000-1600, weekends & Bank Holidays 1100-1700; 1 November to 20 December weekends only 1100-1700. Closed Christmas, New Year and January to Easter.

Some parts of the forest are accessible for people using a wheelchair. The park closes at 8pm.

Nearest station is Bishop Auckland. Buses to Hamsterley village from Bishop Auckland bus station. It takes 20 minutes to walk from Hamsterley village to the forest.
