The only working bridge of its kind in England. This unique structure dominates the Middlesbrough skyline was originally designed to allow tall ships to pass underneath. It opened in 1911 and can still carry 9 cars or 200 people on each crossing. Gantry system. The Visitor Information Centre promotes the history of the bridge and surrounding area through the use of graphic panels, video, computers, objects and models. (Contact for opening times of Centre.) Nearest major road is A66. Take the A66 to Middlesbrough. At Hartington interchange turn left over Metz Bridge into North Road A178, turn left into Snowdon Road, at roundabout take 3rd exit into Vulcan Street at junction with Ferry Road turn left then first right along A178 to Ferry Road and the Transporter.
Nearest station is Middlesbrough Station. Exit the station onto Bridge Street West, turn right and walk to the junction with Albert Road. Turn left and walk to Ferry Road.
